Got a call from 6193542643?

Called by woman claiming she was from Reader's Market and was interest in promoting my husbands book. Number came up as telemarketer and when I looked it up it is a scam number. My number is on the do not call list which I register every three months.

August 12, 2019

We receive a call from this number every day and they never leave a message. We've also gotten calls from someone telling us they will promote my husband's book, and even after we keep telling them we're not interested, they continue to interrupt us and call back again a few days later.

SUPER SCAM ALERT... Got a call from 619-354-2643, ext. 1551 from a guy named KEVIN TOREZ or so he said. Claimed that book scouts from his company had noticed my novel THE SHAMROCK RUNNER would be a great fit for them to represent in an upcoming marketing event to be held in New York. He left a message and asked for me to call him back. Naturally suspicious, I Googled the number and it was listed (multiple times) as a scam number by several people. Different names and companies, but I was interested to see what he had to say so I called back and finally got ahold of him. He sounded Mid-Eastern with some difficulty pronouncing words but I gave him the benefit of the doubt and listened as he began his spiel. He mentioned how his company could put my book in Kindle format up on a big screen at the event and publishers, producers and directors were all looking for material such as mine from all over the world. Then, he asked what genre the material would fall into. I knew he hadn't read or seen any synopsis of the book and probably was reading from a script, but he kept rambling on, finally mentioning that writers with their company normally would receive 150000 to 200,000 dollars with sales of their work and it would (quickly mentioned the next part) only run 1,100 dollars, then proceeded on to talk about the thousands of people who would be viewing my work at the event. I stopped him then and asked if I heard him correctly that it was going to cost me 1,100 dollars and he said yes, but...before he could say anything else I told him the conversation was ended and hung up. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS...check the number people are calling from before you call them back if you don't recognize the area code or number. AND...I was very careful not to say YES to anything he asked because I knew from news listings that they can record your voice and then use that recording as proof that you agreed to any purchases they may make with a stolen credit card or social security number or gain entry into your savings. BE ALERT that these are tough times to be a writer or any tax-paying individual for that matter and these scams are very easy to make money from on people who are not aware of their circumstances or too trustful of people they don't even know calling from unknown numbers. Stay safe out there!
