College Republicans begging

I received a cal about a debt I owed and they needed to collect money. I thought they were a debt collector as they claimed. I paid them the money and I found out they are not a legitimate company. They somehow gained access to my credit report and found a debt I owed and called to collect. They have since changed their name and no one answers when you call the number I was given. The odd thing is that I paid this debt in like 3 payments to them. Every time I called to make the payment it sounded legitimate. But since the paid in full was never reported to the merchant, I called them back and they said they changed their name but stated they showed I paid off the debt. I asked for a letter stating this. They said they sent that to me when I paid it off. Now this is over a year after I paid the debt that I am trying to research and find out why it is still on my credit report after filing about 8 disputes. This company informed me that since they had already sent me a copy of the paid in full letter they did not have to send it again. It took me 3 hours and 4 people to finally get another copy of that letter. I have since sent it to the merchant but nothing has happened. I have tried to call this debt collector place back but no one answers. I called the merchant who stated the debt was palced with a collection place that is not the name of who I paid. Of course today si Saturday and this collection agency isnot open on weekends for me to further investigate. But this debt was paid in full in 2019, I have no idea if the place was legitimate or not.
