Yay! I just won $1.5 million! All I have to do is pay the prize patrol $1,500 for delivering the check across state lines. That's the law, don'tcha know. I guess there's a customs branch you have to pass through upon entering Ohio, and it has a rather pricey toll when delivering checks above $1 million. Makes sense, right? I've never seen any such booths at the state line, so I guess I just haven't been paying attention. The problem is, I'm trying to survive on Social Security alone, and I have exactly $14.17 to last me 16 days until my next check. Do you know what groceries I can buy with $14? That's less than $1 a day. It will buy me enough for one hot dog a day, with buns and ketchup. Anyway, when I told Mr. Prize Patrol that I didn't have $1,500, though I'd be happy to pay him out of my winnings, he said, "By law, we can't do that. Ummmm . . . How much DO you have?" When I told him I had $14, if I didn't eat, he told me he would find some financial assistance for me and call me back. I'm patiently waiting for that call now. I'm SURE he'll call back, so pretty soon I'll be eating steak! Can't wait! After all, no one would try to scam a disabled senior, right? The first time I received a similar call, I nearly fell for it. They actually paid off a $7,000 credit card for me so I could pay their fee. Amazing, right? My bank found it suspicious (gee, ya think?) and immediately put a hold on my account. Two days later, I found they had paid off my card with a transfer from a closed or hacked Chase checking account. (I don't bank with Chase.) Thankfully, because I dealt with a human being and had a long and positive history with my bank, I made it out clean. But, because I nearly fell for it, I've been receiving multiple sweepstakes calls every day for over a month. I just received another one while typing this, my third today! So yeah, I'm now officially on the International Stupid List.
